The Honda S2000 (1999–2009) is widely considered the greatest naturally aspirated sports car ever built. Powered by the legendary F20C engine — which produces 240 hp from 2.0 litres without a turbo — the S2000 revs to 9,000 RPM and delivers a driving experience that no modern car can replicate. In 2025, clean S2000 values have doubled in 5 years, and the trend continues upward.

AP1 vs AP2 — Which S2000 Is Better?
The AP1 (1999–2003) has the F20C — 120 hp/litre, the highest specific output of any production N/A engine at launch. The AP2 (2004–2009) uses the larger F22C for more low-end torque but less screaming top-end. Purists prefer the AP1 for its rawness. Drivers who want daily usability prefer the AP2. Both are excellent.
Top Honda S2000 Performance Parts
1. Supercharger / Forced Induction
The F20C/F22C responds beautifully to forced induction. Top options:
- Rotrex C38-91 supercharger kit (maintains N/A character)
- Kraftwerks supercharger kit (bolt-on, 320+ hp)
- Custom turbo build (400+ hp possible)
On N/A builds: Toda Racing high-compression pistons, Mugen cams, ITB kit, and a Skunk2 exhaust manifold can push 270+ hp naturally aspirated.
2. Suspension — Ohlins / Tein
- Öhlins Road & Track DFV coilovers (best for S2000)
- Tein Mono Flex coilovers (excellent value)
- BC Racing BR coilovers
- Cusco front strut brace
- Hardrace rear lower arm
- Whiteline sway bar kit
3. Brakes
The AP1 factory brakes are adequate but benefit from upgrades: Endless 4-pot front caliper kit, Project Mu Club Racer pads, DBA slotted rotors, and Goodridge braided lines.
4. Exhaust — Mugen / Toda Racing
An exhaust is one of the best mods on the S2000. The F20C makes an incredible sound with a free-flowing system. Top choices: Mugen titanium exhaust, Toda Racing exhaust, or Invidia Q300 cat-back.
5. OEM Maintenance Parts
The S2000's high-revving engine needs strict OEM maintenance:
- Genuine Honda F20C timing chain kit (replace at 100,000 km)
- OEM Honda water pump
- Genuine Honda VTEC solenoid gasket kit
- NGK Iridium IX plugs (ILZFR6K-11S)
- Genuine Honda differential oil (every 30,000 km)
S2000 Common Problems & Fixes
- Differential wear: Use only genuine Honda LSD fluid — wrong fluid destroys it
- Oil consumption: Normal at high revs — use 5W-30 full synthetic, check every 3,000 km
- Convertible top leaks: Replace with genuine Honda soft top or Robbins replacement
- Rear subframe cracking: Install Cusco rear subframe brace as preventative measure
