The End of an Era — Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X
When Mitsubishi launched the Lancer Evolution X (CZ4A) in 2007, nobody knew it would be the final chapter of one of the greatest rally-bred sedans ever built. Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4B11T engine producing 295 hp in stock form, the Evo X introduced a twin-clutch SST gearbox, a completely redesigned AWD system with S-AWC (Super All-Wheel Control), and a stiffer, wider platform — making it the most technologically advanced Evo to date.
What Made the Evo X Different?
Unlike the 4G63-powered predecessors (Evo I through IX), the Evo X switched to the 4B11T — a modern aluminum block engine with a more efficient twin-scroll turbo. This allowed quicker spool-up, better fuel economy, and massive headroom for tuning. With the right JDM performance parts — upgraded intercoolers, bigger turbos, fuel injectors, and ECU tunes — the Evo X easily makes 400–600+ whp.
The S-AWC system (combining ACD, AYC, and ASC) gave the Evo X a handling edge that still impresses track drivers today. Pair that with Bilstein shocks, Brembo brakes, and a Torsen front differential, and you have a machine that handles tarmac like a rally car on a closed stage.
Evo X vs Evo IX — Which Should You Buy?
The Evo IX purists will argue the older 4G63 is more tuneable and lighter. That's true — but the Evo X wins in almost every real-world metric: better build quality, more power from stock, superior AWD control, and more refined road manners. For everyday driving mixed with track days, the Evo X is the better choice.
