JDM LSD Guide: Cusco, ATS, Kaaz & Best Limited Slip Differentials for JDM Cars
A Limited Slip Differential (LSD) is one of the single most effective performance upgrades for any JDM car. By transferring torque from the spinning wheel to the wheel with grip, an LSD transforms traction out of corners, improves throttle steer behaviour, and enables controlled drifts in rear-wheel-drive cars. JDM manufacturers and aftermarket specialists have produced some of the world's finest LSDs, and choosing the right unit is critical for your application. At Grovexo JDM, we supply 100% genuine LSD units and rebuild kits worldwide.
Types of LSD: Torsen vs Plate vs Electronic
There are three main categories of LSD used in JDM cars. The Torsen (Torque-Sensing) helical-gear LSD is the most refined β it transfers torque in response to speed difference silently and progressively, with no maintenance required. Found stock in Evo VI TME rear, R34 GTR front, and AE86 GT-Apex. The Multi-plate clutch LSD (1-way, 1.5-way, 2-way) uses friction plates to lock the differential under specific conditions. It provides the most adjustable and aggressive locking characteristics β preferred for motorsport and drift. The Electronic LSD (Active Rear Differential) as found in Evo VIII MR's Super AYC brakes individual wheels to torque-vector β the most sophisticated but complex to maintain.
Best JDM LSD Brands: Cusco, ATS, Kaaz, Nismo
Cusco is Japan's premier aftermarket differential manufacturer. Their RS and Type-MZ LSDs are used by JDM race teams and road enthusiasts globally. Available for virtually every JDM application, Cusco LSDs are fully serviceable with genuine Cusco rebuild plate kits. ATS (Advanced Torque & Speed) specialises in carbon clutch disc LSDs, known for progressive engagement and excellent feel. Kaaz produces high-quality helical and multi-plate LSDs at accessible prices, popular for track and street dual-purpose builds. Nismo (Nissan Motorsport) LSDs are the factory performance option for GT-R and Silvia applications β genuinely made for the cars and available from Grovexo JDM.
1-Way vs 1.5-Way vs 2-Way LSD: Which to Choose?
Multi-plate LSDs come in three engagement characteristics that dramatically affect driving behaviour. A 1-way LSD only locks under acceleration β perfect for street and mild track use as it allows smooth cornering. The standard choice for road cars. A 1.5-way LSD locks more aggressively on acceleration and partially on deceleration β ideal for time attack and spirited road driving where engine braking stability matters. A 2-way LSD locks equally on both acceleration and deceleration β preferred by drift drivers as it stabilises the car during lift-off slides and enables precise throttle steering. For daily drivers, 1-way is recommended. For track/drift, 1.5-way or 2-way.
LSD Rebuild: Plates, Springs & Service
Multi-plate clutch LSDs require periodic rebuild β the friction plates wear and lose locking effectiveness. Signs of LSD wear include reduced differential action (both wheels spinning freely), unusual noises, and unpredictable behaviour at the limit. Rebuild intervals depend on use: track use every 20,000-30,000 km, street use every 50,000+ km. The rebuild process involves replacing the friction plates, reaction discs, and spring stack. Genuine Cusco rebuild kits (complete with OEM-spec friction plates), genuine Kaaz plate kits, and ATS carbon rebuild sets are all available from Grovexo JDM.
Best LSD by JDM Car Application
For Nissan Silvia S13/S14/S15: Nismo 2-way LSD or Cusco Type-RS 1.5-way β the perfect drift rear diff. For Nissan Skyline R32-R34 GTR: Genuine Nismo front and rear LSD upgrade β transforms cornering balance. For Honda S2000 AP1/AP2: Cusco Type-RS 1.5-way β transforms the already great S2000 handling. For Subaru WRX STI: STI Spec-C rear LSD or Cusco rear RS LSD β enables precise corner exit traction. For Mitsubishi Evo: Cusco front and rear LSDs compliment the ACD system. For Toyota Supra JZA80: TRD rear LSD or Nismo Competition LSD β essential for power levels above 500 hp.
LSD Installation Notes
Correct LSD installation requires: fresh genuine manufacturer-spec differential oil (LSD-specific friction-modified formula), correct preload torque on side bearing adjusters, and proper break-in procedure (50 figure-eights at low speed to bed the plates). Using standard differential oil in an LSD causes chatter, rapid plate wear, and eventual failure. Genuine LSD-specification oils from each manufacturer are available at Grovexo JDM.
